Text

On Monday morning Nora found a green glove on the wall outside the school. It was small, it had a hole in one finger, and someone had drawn a star on the back in black pen.

She put it on the gate post so that its owner could see it. On Tuesday the glove was still there. On Wednesday it was gone, and Nora was glad — until she saw it on the pavement, wet and flat, two streets away.

She took it home, washed it, and dried it on the radiator. Then she wrote a small sign: Green glove. One star. Ask Nora, class 5b. She put the sign on the school noticeboard, next to a poster about a lost cat.

Nobody came on Thursday. Nobody came on Friday. On Monday a boy from class 3 stood in front of her with his hands behind his back. He did not say hello. He said, "The star is mine. I drew it with my brother's pen."

Nora gave him the glove. He put it on, looked at the hole in the finger, and said, "It still has the hole." Then he ran off, and Nora went to her lesson, and that was the end of it — except that for the rest of the year, whenever the boy saw her in the corridor, he lifted his green hand.
